Since going into business, people have asked me why I chose to become solely a senior photographer. Of all the things I could have chosen, why did I choose that one? I’ll tell you.
When I first got my “big girl” camera at the end of 2010, I thought I was a rock star. I began taking pictures for everyone and for everything! In 2013, I started charging people money. Do you want to know how much I charged for a photography session? $25. $25!!! Haha! Even though I didn’t make much money, I learned more than I could have imagined in a small time. I learned more about light. And oh, how I came to love looking for light everywhere I shot. I also learned how to pace myself and pose people easily. It also began to feel more natural to me.
My First Senior Sessions – Did I Like Being a Senior Photographer?
And then came my first senior session. It was a change of pace for me, and I wasn’t used to it at all. I found it hard to pose one person instead of a bunch in a family. I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. So, I determined to not do seniors again. Maybe I would do families. Here are a few pictures from a few of my first senior sessions ever.
They’re not bad, right? 😉 But I’ve grown a lot over the past few years, and I’m grateful for that. I’ve also purchased a nicer camera. I’ll be the first to tell you that I’ve taught it everything it knows. 😉
2017 Seniors
A year and a half ago I was asked by a few members of my congregation at church to take their senior pictures. I was scared! I didn’t consider myself a senior photographer. I didn’t love the other ones I did. But I decided to do it anyway and see how it went. And you want to know what? I LOVED it. I loved being a senior photographer. In the other sessions I did that fall, I felt rushed. My best work was so much harder to do with families. But I felt like I could take my time with my seniors. And I found that posing them came so much easier to me than it did before. In fact, I feel like posing seniors has become a strength of mine. Imagine that! Here are a few pictures from the senior pictures I did back in 2017.
It looks like I still have a thing for brick walls.
2018 Seniors
In early 2018 I felt like I should start a photography business. It took me by surprise since I wasn’t planning on doing so for at least a few more years. And guess what I wanted to be? You got it! A senior photographer. Those sessions the previous fall had fixed me for good. I knew I never wanted to do anything else. Here is some of my work from last year.
Do you want to know what I love about being a senior photographer? Everything. Haha. But, to make a list for you, I think teens are awesome. I love getting to spend the evening with them for their shoot! They are talented, gifted, unique, determined, and blossoming into the person they’ll be for the rest of their lives. What’s more, they’re easy to pose! They want their pictures taken! And they’ve been looking forward to their senior pictures for years. I love their excitement and willingness to try new things. I can’t believe I ever had a hard time posing them.
My Strengths As a Senior Photographer
Some of my strengths as a senior photographer are that I am great at telling people what to do. Just ask my kids. Haha. As soon as you show up at your session, I take the lead. I tell you how to pose, where to stand, what to do, and you don’t have to worry about a thing! I am also friendly and encouraging. You might feel nervous for your session. That’s totally normal! But I’ll be there to help you feel comfortable. And I’ll engage with you the whole time we’re shooting. I’m fun, I take charge, and I get you to relax and be you. I’m also very efficient and organized, so the business side of your session is also easy and timely.
I’m so excited to see where my journey as a senior photographer will take me. I’m excited to meet my clients this year. Come and join me! I look forward to your session.
