Overcast Evening

Overcast days are not my favorite for portraits, but they are fun for some moody-looking pictures. My family and I went out in the evening shortly after dinner to Dow Gardens. The kids had fun playing in the bubbles. My husband had fun watching them and taking videos of the action. And I had fun taking pictures of flowers.

One of my favorite things about going to Dow Gardens is how diverse it is in every season. Even in the warmer months, the gardens change week to week. One week you’ll see blossoms of one type of plant, and the next those will be gone and you’ll see another. No matter how many times I go, I find different varieties of plants. This place is just so beautiful. I think that’s also why I love to take senior portraits here. I’m always discovering new places for portraits, and there are so many different and beautiful backgrounds. Bridges? You got ’em. Flowers? Yup! A barn, a stone fireplace, fir trees, a waterfall? Yep, yep, yep and yeppers.

Anywho, so it was overcast this evening, and I almost didn’t bring the camera. I adore the sun and back light, especially when shooting flowers. But I did anyway, and I was able to get so much mood from there being no sun. Just take a look!

Senior with Sass | My Brother’s Daughter | Tri-City Photographer

Tori is my niece. She and her sister, Akasha, flew out here all the way the heck from Utah to help out when my baby was born. She is one of my older brother’s daughters, and I love this girl to pieces. It’s so weird to me to say that my niece is old enough to be a senior and graduate from high school, BUT (and it’s a big but…with only one ‘t’) I have three more nieces older than her. You guys, I’m not old. I swear.

It is weird to remember the day she was born and to know that she is now 17 years old though! I think my favorite thing about taking Tori’s senior pictures is that she LOVED being in them! Seriously, seniors are the best at that. With technology these days (OK, maybe I really AM old) teenagers get used to being in front of the camera since they have them attached to their bodies at all times. I remember when I was in high school trying to weasel my way out of my math homework, and I would say to my teacher, “I’m never even going to use this!” and they would say back, “You will, and you won’t be able to carry a computer in your back pocket”. Well guess what, Teacher?? It’s called a smart phone, and it’s certainly smarter than I ever could have been learning math.

Anyway, back to Tori. She was a natural in front of the camera. We went out together with her sister  and my newborn baby boy to Dow Gardens, and the weather was warm, a little bit humid, and absolutely lovely. She favored the candid photos as opposed to the posed ones, and seeing her light up just made my day. We had a blast, and time flew by so fast. Kind of like my life in my old age…  😉

Senior Sweetheart | 17 Year-Old Niece | Midland, Michigan Photographer

Akasha came out to Michigan when I was about to have my baby. She and her sister, Tori, were just about to start their senior year in high school, and I REALLY wanted to be able to take their pictures. I mean, they’re fun, smart and beautiful, and who wouldn’t want to show that off??  I was afraid that since I had JUST given birth to a baby, we wouldn’t be able to make it work. You want to know why? Because newborns eat all. the. time. Seriously, ask your mom and she’ll tell you. 😉 But we were able to get out and take pictures while baby slept peacefully in his stroller.  I just love my job. This young lady has a pair of the most beautiful eyes. She and Tori and I had a blast going around Dow Gardens together (with a baby that was only a few days old at the time!) taking pictures in beautiful light. The weather was gorgeous, the company was fun, and the four of us had a wonderful time.
