Senior Portrait Session with Emma

I just came back from visiting Utah. I’m from Utah – born and raised! My older sister just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, and I flew out there to surprise my sister. I haven’t visited Utah in about five years. I can’t believe it’s been that long. Long story short, my sister was surprised by my visit and then had the baby less than 12 hours after I flew in. Talk about good timing! As I was there, Emma’s mom called me to schedule Emma’s senior portrait session. We scheduled it for the following week back in Michigan.

Even though we’ve had a rainy fall, the weather was absolutely beautiful. I love it when the weather cooperates with my plans. 😉 Emma had picked downtown Midland and the Chippewa Nature Center for her two locations. They were perfect and not terribly busy. Before arriving at downtown, Emma opted to get her hair done by my make-up artist, Cathy. She did Saige’s make-up for her shoot. Cathy does a great job in prepping my seniors for their portrait sessions. After Emma was done we met up and had an amazing time. She opted to bring her stuffed pineapple, and one of my favorite shots from the whole evening was taken with it. Scroll down to see it!

Emma, you’re a beautiful soul. Keep on shining because the world needs more people like you.

Golden Autumn Hues

Autumn is my absolute favorite season of the year. It’s as though everything gets painted over with an enormous, golden brush. My husband claims that fall is more of a woman’s season. It probably is. 😉  Most women I know prefer the fall. Maybe it’s the sweaters and the cute boots. Perhaps it’s the pumpkin in everything. I personally love the orchards and the cooler temperatures. But of all the things it is, it is definitely magical to me. I come from a place that is hot most of the year. We do have seasons there, but they are short-lived. Here in Michigan we have the most beautiful and drawn-out seasons, and I much prefer that.

Every year when fall comes around I get giddy with excitement over the changing leaves. My husband and I try and decide which color is our favorite, and I always come back to the golden ones. Not quite yellow. Not brown. But right in-between. Here in Midland we have some gorgeous maple trees that turn that orange-y color, and they are amazing! I hope you’re enjoying the fall as much as I am. These were all taken in my backyard.

I also love this season because this is when so many people have their senior sessions! In fact, I just took one a few days ago. I can’t wait to share them with you in the coming days. Stay tuned!

The Traveling Dress

I was asked late last year by a dear friend of mine if I wanted to be a part of her group for The Traveling Dress Collective. This group is a blog that was started by a group of photographers who wanted to each shoot just one dress in whatever way they wanted to.  The dress makes its way from photographer to photographer around the world until it has been photographed by about seven people. This idea is fascinating to me! I said ‘yes’ without hesitation.

We took a while to pick out a dress we all loved, and we finally settled on a Tie-Dye Vici Collection dress. As soon as I saw what dress we were going to get, I knew that I wanted a red-head and that I wanted to take pictures on the beach in Bay City. Red hair would be so perfect with that dress! I also knew I wanted a senior girl. Since I didn’t know any red-headed teens, I asked around and found one. Thankfully, she was happy to help me out with this project.

We only had one day to shoot, and I have to admit that I was very disappointed by the weather. It was completely overcast. I wanted sun on that red hair! But I think that the location still worked out. If anything, the gray of the sky and the lake made her red hair stand out even more. We were able to use other areas around the beach. We used such as paths, walkways, and tall reeds.

I also really enjoyed being able to freelens on this shoot. I even got my Lensbaby out for some shots! Here’s end result of all our pictures of one dress together.

Dress Rental Photoshoot

I recently had the opportunity to borrow a dress from an amazing company called Opal and June. They are just getting their business set up, and they let a few photographers shoot their dresses so they would have content to blog about. I was fortunate enough to grab a dress before they were all taken. I have to say, this dress is the BOMB. Gah! I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it.

Once I got the dress rental set up I knew I wanted to take a picture of a senior, or at least a student from a local high school. I set up a poll on my Instagram page and waited. Enter in beautiful Saige. I had met Saige once before while I was taking her best friend’s senior photos just a couple of months earlier. I was SO happy when she offered to let me take her pictures in this dress! She was exactly what I was looking for, and I knew that we were going to have a great time together.

We got the dress in the middle of September and planned the shoot for a Friday. Saige and Grace and I met up at our fabulous make-up artist’s home for her hair and make up. Cathy  was AMAZING. I really hope we get to work with each other again down the road. She was awesome.

After hair and make up were complete we headed over to the church I had envisioned to go with this dress from the beginning. The location was perfect. It was also the windiest day of the year. In fact, I overshot this session since many of my pictures were with Saige’s hair in her face. I was worried, but the wind worked to our advantage.

September Stroll

September is a month where I start feeling like things are changing. Maybe it’e because my kids are starting school again. Or maybe it’s because it seems the weather gets its crispness in September. Perhaps it’s when I start noticing the sky becoming bluer or the shadows getting longer. But September is a month of change. And I love it so much.

This year I feel as though we didn’t get a month of being in-between. It’s as though we went straight from a hot summer sun to a cold end-of-fall chill. Where did the 60 degree weather go? What about the low 70’s?? Perhaps we’ll still have a few of those days in the coming weeks, but it sure seems like it got cold fast.

My husband and I decided to take the kids out to the Chippewa Nature Center and have a picnic, possibly our last one until next spring. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the bug spray, so we both ate and got eaten. But it’s all good, right? What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? Those darn bugs! Arg, I sure hate mosquitoes. In actuality, they were around when we went for a stroll and not as much when we started eating. Thankfully.

And since the leaves haven’t started turning much yet, I took a few liberties and changed them myself in Photoshop. 😉 Come at me, October. I’m ready for you.
